Environmentalists will rally today (12 p.m., San Telmo Sq., Las Palmas) in defense of at-risk species against Canarian Government’s plan to reduce the official list of endangered species in the Canaries. This plan would result in an open-road policy for some of the most controversial infrastructure projects such as the new industrial port in Granadilla, Southern Tenerife. More specifically, it has been proven by scientists that this project would seriously affect the natural balance of an area such as El Médano.
Most Canarian citizens are highly concerned with the protection of environment in such a fragile territory. That is the reason why it seems so hard to understand why the Canarian Government chooses to fight for big corporations and tycoons’ interests rather than preserve Canarian people’s natural heritage. The fact that the island’s Government refuses to follow the scientific community’s advice against the relaxation of protection rules only makes clearer to us that this is a Government willing to defend speculation against honest citizens.
Please help us let the world know about this serious problem in the Canaries and pass this on to your contacts or whoever may be interested. If you live in Gran Canaria or plan to be there on 20th March, take some time to join the rally. In doing so, you will get to know a bit more about real life in the Canaries and you will contribute to the preservation of species and the defense of the environment in these islands in West Africa.
